The Millais Gallery is one of Southampton's free main art galleries and offers a lively and accessible programme of mainly contemporary art. The Millais Gallery is part of Southampton Solent University, in Southampton's city centre. It is a public art gallery, committed to the exhibition of contemporary visual arts that address issues of relevance to culturally diverse communities.
Its dynamic programme of exhibitions and events complements the work of Southampton Solent's University's staff and students in art, design and media, theory practice and cultural histories.
The Millais Gallery was opened in June 1996 to coinside with an exhibition to mark the centenary of John Everett Millais's death in August 1896, organised in association with Southampton City Art Gallery. Exhibitions at the Millais Gallery typically focus on the work of young artists, designers, makers and curators; are of particular interest to the local and regional community; provide opportunities for students for the University's art, design, media practise and theory courses to show their work and work in the gallery; or are reserch -based exhibitions which may incorporate material of local significance. The exhibitions are all designed to capture a diversity of approach, and are aimed at promoting enjoyment and understanding.
