Background History
At 11.40pm on the 14th April 1912 R.M.S. Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic, near Newfoundland.
At 12.20am on the 15th April the crew was given the order to send away women and children in the ship’s lifeboats.
Titanic sank at 2.20am on the 15th April.
Of the 1523 people who lost their lives 549 came from Southampton.
The disaster, which made headlines across the world, had a devastating effect on the people of Southampton
In April 2007 Southampton commemorated the 95th anniversary of the sinking of R.M.S. Titanic with a series of events held across the city and then even more successful events, exhibitions and activities took place in 2008 and 2009. Below are the 2010 events leading up to the 100th anniversary in 2012.

Sunday 18 April
The 2010 Civic Titanic Commemorative Service
Venue: St. Mary’s Church, St. Mary’s Street, Southampton. SO14 1NX
Time: 11.45am
This annual commemorative service, lead by the Reverend Dr. Julian Davies, remembers the 549 crew from Southampton who perished in the tragedy. The service includes readings, music and singing; all of which focus on the impact the tragedy had on the City.
St Mary’s is Southampton’s mother church and this is where, on the 20 April 1912, the first Titanic Commemorative service was held. The Mayor of Southampton will be in attendance and all are welcome.
